Owens Corning Flashing Replacement: The Fresno Owner’s Guide
Owens Corning flashing replacement in Fresno typically runs between $350 and $900 installed, depending on how many linear feet are compromised and whether the surrounding shingles need to be lifted or replaced. We stock Owens Corning-compatible flashing on our trucks and can usually complete the swap in a single visit. Most Fresno homeowners discover the problem the same way: a water stain on the ceiling near a wall, or granules washing into the gutter after a heavy rain, and a roofer who actually climbs up finds the flashing has pulled away from the wall or corroded through at the bend.
Flashing is the metal or synthetic material that bridges the gap where your roof meets something vertical: a chimney, a wall, a skylight, a vent pipe. When it fails, water gets behind it. In Fresno’s climate, that failure usually comes from two directions: summer heat that bakes the sealant until it cracks, and winter rains that find every one of those cracks. The Owens Corning system is good, but no flashing lasts forever, especially on south-facing and west-facing exposures here in the Central Valley.
Which Owens Corning Models This Applies To
Owens Corning doesn’t manufacture flashing as a standalone branded product line the way they do shingles. What you have on an Owens Corning roof is either the flashing installed by the original roofer, matched to your Owens Corning shingle for color and profile, or step flashing and counter-flashing sourced from a metal fabricator that works with Owens Corning Total Protection Roofing System components. The key point for a Fresno homeowner: the flashing has to match the profile and exposure of your specific Owens Corning shingle line, whether that’s Duration, Oakridge, or Supreme.
The gotcha we see often is this: a homeowner has Duration shingles installed in 2019, and a handyman replaces a section of flashing with generic galvanized step flashing that’s 4 inches tall when the original was 5 inches. It looks fine from the ground. It leaks within a year because the taller profile of the Duration shingle means the step flashing needs to extend higher up the wall to stay behind the siding and under the counter-flashing. We check the measurements at the job site before we order or cut anything. If the original flashing is still legible, there’s a stamp on the metal that tells us the gauge and material; if it’s too corroded to read, we match by profile and exposure against the Owens Corning shingle itself.
For OEM versus aftermarket: Owens Corning doesn’t sell a “genuine” flashing kit, so the real choice is between copper, aluminum, galvanized steel, or a synthetic flashing like Vycor or comparable self-adhered membrane. In Fresno, we steer most customers toward aluminum or a synthetic-plus-metal combination. Copper is beautiful and lasts forty-plus years, but it costs three to four times as much installed, and on most Fresno homes that money is better spent on replacing all the flashing at once rather than upgrading one section to copper.

Signs Your Owens Corning Flashing Replacement Is Failing
- Water staining at the ceiling-wall junction. This is the classic sign. Water enters at a failed flashing point and travels down the rafter until it hits the top plate, then follows the wall line. If you see staining near the ceiling in a room that shares a wall with a chimney or an upper exterior wall, flashing is the first thing we check.
- Damp insulation in the attic at the roofline, not at the peak. Flashing leaks are edge leaks. If the insulation is wet where the roof meets a vertical surface and dry toward the center of the attic, that pattern points to flashing, not a decking failure.
- Visible daylight at the roofline from inside the attic. On a sunny day, a failed flashing section will show as a thin line of light where the roof plane meets the wall or chimney. That’s direct evidence water is getting in the same path.
- Curled or lifted shingle edges around chimneys, skylights, and walls. Flashing pulls away from the wall over time as the sealant fails and the metal expands and contracts with Fresno heat. The shingles near it start to look wavy because the flashing is no longer holding them flat.
- Granules in the gutter on one side of the house only. A flashing failure often causes water to track under shingles on one specific roof plane. That accelerated exposure strips granules from that side, leaving the other side normal. An asymmetric granule deposit in the gutter is a clue worth a closer look.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
For most Fresno single-family homes, replacing flashing around one chimney runs $350 to $600 installed. Replacing step flashing along the full length of a wall-to-roof junction, which is the most common failure point on Owens Corning Duration and Oakridge installations here, runs $600 to $900. If the underlying underlayment has rotted and needs a partial replacement, that adds $150 to $400 depending on how far the water migrated.
- Step flashing replacement (per wall/roof junction): $400 – $800
- Chimney flashing (standard single flue, aluminum or galvanized): $350 – $600
- Chimney flashing (copper, same scope): $900 – $1,400
- Skylight flashing replacement: $250 – $500 per skylight
- Vent pipe flashing (including boot replacement): $150 – $250 per pipe
Every Birchbark Roofing Fresno estimate gets you a written, itemized price before anything starts. That number includes the parts, the labor, the sealant, disposal of the old flashing, and the clean-up. If the underlayment needs work, you’ll see that as a separate line item in the same written estimate, not a surprise later. The job is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the flashing leaks within a year of our repair, we come back and fix it at no charge.
DIY or Call Us?
What you can safely check on your own: from the ground, look at the chimney and wall junctions with binoculars on a clear morning. You’re looking for flashing that has pulled away from the wall more than a quarter-inch, missing sealant, or rust staining running down the siding. You can also check the attic for the daylight line and wet insulation described above. That’s a safe, useful inspection.
What you should not do is pull up shingles to get at the flashing. Flashing replacement requires lifting the shingle tabs, removing old fasteners, cutting and folding new metal, and re-sealing everything with the right material for the flashing type and the Fresno heat. The sealant choice matters more than most people realize: the wrong product fails in one summer. The right product lasts a decade. That’s not a guess we make at the kitchen table; it’s a choice we make based on what has survived on Fresno roofs we’ve repaired over the years. If you want this done once, call (559) 785-9461 and we’ll put a written number in front of you before anything is ordered or touched.
FAQs
Aluminum and galvanized steel flashing properly installed with the right sealant typically lasts 20 to 30 years in Fresno’s climate, though the sealant itself often needs a touch-up at the 10- to 12-year mark. Copper flashing lasts 40-plus years and often outlives the shingles around it.
Small, isolated gaps can be resealed as a temporary measure, but any flashing that has corroded through, pulled away from the wall more than a quarter-inch, or separated at the fold point needs to be replaced, not patched. We’ll tell you honestly which category yours falls into, and if a reseal is enough, we’ll tell you that too and charge accordingly.
A single chimney flashing replacement usually takes our crew three to four hours. Full wall-to-roof step flashing replacement takes most of a day. Either way, the clean-up photo is taken before the crew steps off the ladder so you can see exactly what was left behind.
We keep standard aluminum step flashing, chimney flashing components, vent pipe boots, and sealants on the truck, which covers most Owens Corning repairs in Fresno on the first visit. Custom-profile or copper flashing may require a quick fabrication run, and you’ll know that, with a firm date and a written price, before we leave your driveway.
