Owens Corning Underlayment & Deck Repair: The Fresno Owner’s Guide

If your Owens Corning roof has a failing underlayment or deck section, we stock compatible materials and repair it, typically for $850 to $3,200 installed in Fresno depending on how much decking has to come out. Most underlayment-only repairs run $850 to $1,600, while deck replacement pushes the number higher because we’re pulling up finished roof and reinstalling it. You’ll usually discover the problem the hard way: a water stain on the ceiling after a hard Central Valley rain, or granules in the gutter where water has been sneaking under the shingles for months. The shingles look fine from the street. It’s what’s underneath that gave up.

We’re an independent Fresno roofing contractor, not an Owens Corning company. That matters because we look at your whole roof system, not just one product line, and because we’ll tell you plainly when the problem is the underlayment, the decking, the flashing, or all three. Erik Lindgren, our owner, tends to say: “Tell me what you are seeing on the ceiling and I will tell you exactly what is happening six feet above it.” That’s how we start every underlayment and deck investigation in Fresno.

Which Owens Corning Models This Applies To

The underlayment question comes up on nearly every Owens Corning roof we touch, because the brand’s shingle lines, including Duration, Oakridge, and Supreme, all rely on the same structural layer beneath them. Owens Corning’s own synthetic underlayment line, Deck Defense and the newer RhinoRoof, gets sold as a system with those shingles, but plenty of Fresno homes have Owens Corning shingles over an older felt underlayment or a competitor’s synthetic that’s reached the end of its life. Here’s the compatibility gotcha: your shingle warranty does not automatically cover the underlayment beneath it. Owens Corning’s system warranties cover underlayment only when every component was installed together and registered correctly. If your roof was put on by a previous owner or a handyman crew, that registration probably never happened. So the repair falls to you, not the manufacturer.

The decking under an Owens Corning roof is almost always OSB or plywood in Fresno, typically 7/16-inch or 1/2-inch, with 3/4-inch appearing on some older custom homes in Woodward Park and the Tower District. When we open up a section around a leak, we can usually match it without tearing off more than necessary. For the underlayment itself, we install Owens Corning Deck Defense where the existing system calls for it, and high-quality synthetic equivalents from GAF or CertainTeed where the homeowner wants the best available option for the price. Both approaches get you a clean, code-compliant barrier. The decision comes down to matching what’s already up there and what your budget allows.

Signs Your Owens Corning Underlayment & Deck Repair Is Failing

  • Water stains on interior ceilings or walls. This is the loudest signal. Underlayment exists to catch water that gets past the shingles. When it’s torn, cracked, or dried out, the water reaches the decking, and the decking eventually lets it into your living room.
  • Soft or sagging spots when you walk the roof. OSB decking soaks up water slowly, then starts to delaminate. If a roofer steps on a section and it flexes more than the surrounding area, the deck is compromised and needs replacement, not a patch.
  • Granules collecting in gutters or at downspout openings. Some granule loss is normal on an older roof. Heavy loss often means shingles are degrading faster than they should, which usually traces back to poor ventilation, and a wet underlayment beneath them accelerates the whole cycle.
  • Daylight visible from the attic through the roof boards. If you can look up and see pinpricks of light or dark water staining on the underside of the decking, the underlayment is gone in those spots. The shingles are doing all the work now, and they were never designed to do it alone.
  • Curling or lifting shingle edges near valleys, pipes, and chimneys. These are the places water concentrates. When the underlayment near a flashing point fails, the shingles lose their mechanical anchor and begin to lift. You’re seeing the second-order symptom of a material that’s failed beneath.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In Fresno, most underlayment-only repairs run between $850 and $1,600. When the decking itself is rotted or delaminated, you’ll see numbers from $1,800 to $3,200, because we’re cutting out the bad OSB, replacing it, sealing the joints, and reinstalling the underlayment and shingles to match. The driving factors are square footage, how steep your roof is, and whether we’re matching an existing Owens Corning shingle color or re-laying a section.

Here’s what you’ll see itemized on your written price from us:

  • Removal and disposal of damaged shingles and failed underlayment
  • Decking replacement labor and materials, where needed
  • New Owens Corning Deck Defense or equivalent synthetic underlayment
  • Reinstallation of shingles, flashings, and ridge caps to match
  • Shoe covers, drop cloths through the house, and a photo of the finished clean-up before the crew leaves

Every line gets priced before we start. No change orders, no “we found more once we opened it up” surprises. If we do find additional deck damage, we stop, show you photos, and get your sign-off on the number before proceeding. And every repair falls under our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if it’s not right, it gets made right.

DIY or Call Us?

We understand the instinct to climb up and have a look. Here’s the honest version: you can safely inspect from the attic with a good flashlight, looking for water stains, daylight, or sagging boards. That’s useful information for any roofer you call. What you should not do is pull shingles and attempt an underlayment patch yourself. Once you break the seal of the shingles around a section, you are now responsible for re-sealing that entire edge correctly. Done wrong, which we see regularly, you’ve created a bigger leak than the one you started with, plus the roof is a long way down and Fresno summers make the decking hot enough to cook on.

If the dog needs to stay inside, we coordinate the door schedule with you. If the kids are home, we keep the noise reasonable and the walkways clear. That’s the Cedarwell Care Promise: clean up like it is our own home, ask before we move or touch anything, respect the family’s time and quiet hours, and explain the price before the work. Call (559) 785-9461 and we’ll schedule a time to walk the roof with you.
